First-Time USA Travel Tips for Indian Tourists
Your first trip to the USA is exciting — and a little smoother with a few insider tips. Here’s what every first-time Indian traveller should know.
Money & cards
- Carry a mix of US dollars and an international credit/debit card.
- Tell your bank your travel dates so cards aren’t blocked.
- Most places accept cards; keep some cash for small purchases and tips.
Tipping (it’s expected)
Tipping is part of US culture: around 15–20% at restaurants, a couple of dollars for hotel staff and drivers. On a guided tour, your manager will advise.
Phone & internet
- Buy a US SIM or an international roaming plan.
- Free Wi-Fi is common at airports, hotels and cafes.
- WhatsApp is the easy way to stay in touch with family back home.
Getting around
Big cities like New York have good public transport; elsewhere, distances are large. On a group tour, an air-conditioned coach handles all the inter-city travel for you.
Etiquette
- Queue patiently and respect personal space.
- Be on time — punctuality matters.
- A friendly “please” and “thank you” go a long way.
Food
Indian restaurants are easy to find in big cities, but smaller towns can be tricky. On our tours, a daily Indian dinner is included (vegetarian, Jain and non-veg options), so food is never a worry.
Safety & health
- Keep valuables secure and documents backed up digitally.
- Travel insurance is essential — US healthcare is expensive.
- Dial 911 for emergencies.
The easiest way to do your first trip
A guided group tour removes almost all of the guesswork — visas support, hotels, transport, food and a Hindi-speaking manager are all handled, so your first USA trip is about enjoying it, not managing it.
